About the team and the role:
As a
Senior MTS Software Engineer
in eBay’s
Identity team
, you will design, build, and scale critical identity services that power authentication and user trust across the platform.
This includes systems such as:
Authentication & Authorization
User Onboarding & Management
Web Services Security
Device Fingerprinting
Account Linking / Entity Resolution
You will work on modern identity protocols like
OAuth
and
OpenID Connect
, supporting hundreds of millions of users across web and mobile platforms.
As a senior engineer, you will play a key role across the full product lifecycle — from architecture and design to development, deployment, and continuous improvement — collaborating closely with Product, Design, and Architecture teams.
What you'll do and learn:
Lead and deliver complex technical initiatives independently across teams and domains
Define and drive technical strategy, architecture, and long-term roadmap
Author and influence Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) to guide engineering direction
Own large functional areas with deep technical expertise
Design scalable, secure, and high-performance systems with a strong systems mindset
Drive projects end-to-end from concept to production
Act as a change agent to elevate engineering standards, culture, and best practices
Mentor engineers and promote knowledge sharing across teams
Build flexible and future-proof systems to adapt to evolving platform needs
Lead support, release processes, and on-call for a 24/7 always-on platform
Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies to improve performance, scalability, and compliance
What you will bring:
Technical Expertise
Strong backend development experience in Java or Kotlin (required)
Deep experience building large-scale distributed systems and APIs
Strong system design expertise including:
REST / GraphQL APIs (GraphQL preferred)
Messaging systems
RDBMS and NoSQL databases
Containers and infrastructure layers
Experience implementing identity and federation protocols (OAuth, OpenID Connect)
Proven ability to drive architecture across multiple domains
Leadership & Impact
Experience defining and executing technical strategy and roadmap
Strong ability to influence stakeholders and align on complex architectural decisions
Track record of improving engineering velocity and code quality across teams
Experience leading large cross-team initiatives from inception to delivery
Mindset & Collaboration
Excellent decision-making skills in ambiguous and fast-changing environments
Strong ownership, communication, and collaboration skills
Passion for mentoring, coaching, and growing teams
Growth mindset with continuous learning and adaptability

Qualification
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
10+ years of experience
building large-scale distributed systems
5+ years as a technical lead or architect
in identity management domain owning end-to-end system design
