Role Overview: The Software Engineer II is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering high‑quality software solutions aligned with Mastercard’s engineering standards and best practices. The role involves working across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), contributing to scalable and secure microservice‑based architectures, and ensuring reliability, performance, and maintainability of systems. The engineer is also expected to collaborate effectively across teams and contribute to continuous improvement and technical excellence. Key Responsibilities Solution Design & Development: Analyze business and technical requirements and design scalable, resilient solutions using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture. Develop, enhance, and unit test applications in adherence to internal coding standards, SOLID principles, and design best practices. Build and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services using PostgreSQL and SQL‑based data stores. SDLC Ownership: Participate in all phases of the SDLC including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, performance benchmarking, deployment, and post‑production support. Create and maintain technical documentation such as design specifications, use cases, test strategies, deployment plans, feasibility assessments, and effort estimates. Quality & Engineering Excellence: Ensure high code quality through peer reviews, static analysis, security reviews, and adherence to QA/QC standards. Promote best practices related to test automation, performance optimization, secure coding, and maintainability. Contribute to continuous improvement of development standards, frameworks, and engineering processes. Maintenance & Production Support: Support production systems through incident management, root cause analysis, remediation, and participation in on‑call rotations. Drive system stability, availability, and operational excellence through proactive monitoring and improvements. Collaboration & Technical Leadership: Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including Product, QA, DevOps, and globally distributed development teams. Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge sharing through code reviews, design discussions, and technical sessions. Support timely delivery of high‑quality, cost‑effective solutions with faster time‑to‑market. Research & Innovation: Evaluate emerging technologies, frameworks, and tools relevant to backend and microservices development. Participate in proof‑of‑concepts (PoCs) and support technology or vendor evaluations when required. Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Experience & Skills Technical Skills 2–4 years of hands‑on software development experience, preferably in enterprise or financial services environments. Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Boot, with experience designing and developing microservices. Experience with PostgreSQL, SQL, and relational database design. Solid understanding of SDLC, SOLID principles, object‑oriented design, and standard design patterns. Professional Competencies Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and debugging skills. Detail‑oriented, proactive, and capable of working independently under pressure. Effective communication and collaboration skills within diverse, geographically distributed teams. Ability to learn quickly, adapt to new technologies, and take ownership of deliverables.
