Position Overview
The Software Asset Management (SAM) Analyst is responsible for the technical implementation, operation, and continuous improvement of the organization’s SAM capabilities. This role ensures accurate discovery, normalization, reconciliation, and reporting of software assets across the enterprise. The SAM Analyst reports to the SAM Product Owner and works closely with procurement, legal, finance, cybersecurity, and platform engineering teams to enable compliance, cost optimization, and standardized software lifecycle management
Key responsibilities
Software license management & compliance
Maintain accurate records of software entitlements, contracts, and deployments
Perform regular compliance checks to establish Effective License Positions (ELP)
Interpret complex license metrics (user, core, processor, engine, SaaS, indirect access, etc.)
Identify and mitigate compliance risks across on prem, cloud, and hybrid environments
Support remediation planning and compliance improvements
Vendor audit & infringement support
Act as the SAM point of contact during software vendor audits
Prepare, validate, and defend audit data submissions
Challenge inaccurate vendor findings or assumptions
Support Legal and Procurement in responding to infringement claims
Ensure only contractually required information is shared with vendors
Document audit outcomes, risks, and lessons learned
Cost optimization & demand management
Identify opportunities for license reuse, retirement, and consolidation
Track unused or underused software (shelfware)
Support budgeting, forecasting, and license renewal decisions
Advise IT and business teams on optimal licensing models
Support cloud and SaaS subscription optimization
Tooling & data management
Operate and improve SAM tooling (e.g. Snow, Flexera, ServiceNow SAM Pro)
Validate discovery and inventory data quality
Collaborate with IT teams to improve accuracy of deployment data
Maintain audit trails and documentation for compliance evidence
Stakeholder collaboration
Work closely with IT, Procurement, Legal, Finance, and Vendor Management
Provide license guidance to project teams and architects
Educate stakeholders on licensing risks and best practices
Support contract interpretation and license-related decision making
Governance & continuous improvement
Support SAM governance, policies, and standards
Contribute to SAM maturity roadmap and process improvements
Align SAM practices with frameworks such as ISO/IEC 19770 or ITIL
Stay up to date on vendor licensing changes and market trends
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Experience of 8+ years in Software Asset Management, IT Asset Management, or IT Procurement
Strong understanding of software discovery technologies, licensing models, and deployment methods.
Experience with enterprise SAM tools (preferably Flexera or Snow).
Strong communication skills: ability to explain complex licensing topics to non‑experts
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of cloud licensing (Azure, AWS, SaaS models)
Familiarity with enterprise vendor contracts and audit clauses
Understanding of virtualization and data center architectures
ITIL Foundation certification or IT Asset Management certification (CAMP, CSAM, CHAMP).
