Job Summary
The Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Design Engineer is responsible for detailed engineering, design, and coordination of electrical and instrumentation systems for water supply, sewerage networks, pumping stations, Water Treatment Plants (WTP), and Sewage Treatment Plants (STP). The role includes preparation of design documents, drawings, BOQs, technical specifications, vendor coordination, and support during execution and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Design – General
Prepare electrical load calculations and power distribution schemes
Design HT/LT systems (11kV/33kV/415V as applicable)
Transformer sizing and substation layout design
Diesel Generator (DG) sizing and synchronization schemes
Cable sizing calculations (power & control cables)
Preparation of Single Line Diagrams (SLD)
Earthing and lightning protection system design
Illumination and small power layout
Preparation of BOQ and technical specifications
Vendor drawing review and approval
2. Pumping Stations (Raw Water / Clear Water / Sewage)
Design of electrical systems for:
Vertical turbine pumps
Submersible pumps
Horizontal centrifugal pumps
Motor selection and control philosophy (DOL, Star-Delta, Soft Starter, VFD)
MCC & PCC panel design
PLC-based control system design
SCADA integration for remote monitoring
Design of:
Level control systems (ultrasonic, pressure transmitters)
Flow measurement (magnetic flow meters)
Pressure monitoring systems
Surge protection and interlocking schemes
Design of standby power systems
3. Water Treatment Plant (WTP) – E&I Design Activities
Power distribution design for:
Clarifiers
Flash mixers
Flocculators
Rapid sand filters
Sludge handling systems
Instrumentation design for:
pH analyzers
Turbidity meters
Chlorine analyzers
Flow meters (Raw water, treated water, backwash lines)
Pressure transmitters
Level transmitters
PLC & SCADA architecture development
Control philosophy documentation
Field instrument layout and cable routing
Preparation of:
Instrument index
I/O list
Cable schedule
Loop diagrams
Panel GA drawings and wiring diagrams
4. Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) – E&I Design Activities
Electrical design for:
Aeration blowers
SBR/MBBR systems
RAS/WAS pumps
Sludge dewatering units
Decanters
Hazardous area classification (where applicable)
Gas detection systems (H₂S, methane)
DO (Dissolved Oxygen) monitoring systems
MLSS monitoring systems
Motorized valves and actuator control
Integration with centralized SCADA system
Energy-efficient system design (VFD-based control)
5. Pipe Network & Distribution System
Electrical & instrumentation design for:
Flow monitoring stations
Pressure monitoring stations
District Metering Areas (DMA)
Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) design
Telemetry system design
Solar-powered instrumentation (where applicable)
Cathodic protection coordination (if required)
Control panel design for booster pumping stations
Documentation & Deliverables
Single Line Diagram (SLD)
Control Schematics
Instrument Hook-up Drawings
Cable Tray Layout
Earthing Layout
Lighting Layout
BOQ & Cost Estimation
Technical Specifications
FAT & SAT Documentation
As-built drawings
Coordination Responsibilities
Coordinate with:
Civil team (for foundation & equipment layout)
Mechanical team (pump & equipment data)
Process team (treatment philosophy)
Client & consultants
Attend technical meetings
Site visits and commissioning support
Vendor inspections & FAT participation

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical / Instrumentation Engineering
5–12 years experience in Water / Wastewater infrastructure projects
Knowledge of relevant standards (IEC, IS, IEEE)
Experience in AutoCAD / EPLAN / ETAP / Dialux
Experience in PLC (Siemens/Allen Bradley/Schneider) & SCADA systems
**Security clearance**
This role requires the successful candidate to hold a minimum of a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance.
Due to the nature of work this role will be delivering and for the protection of certain assets, the successful candidate has to be a UK national or in MoD approved cases a Dual National from a non-ITAR country.
