About this role

Job Description Summary Become part of a R&D team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition. The Lead Development Application Engineer will define Communication and IEC61850 product technical requirements and solutions using specifications, standards. The successful candidate will be a solid team player, with a methodical and structured approach to their work, with excellent verbal and written communication skills with comprehensive understanding of technical concepts and principles for Grid Automation device communication and advancing IEC61850 basics and applications. Lead Application Engineer must be able to establish and maintain strong relationships with product teams for implementation. Job Description Roles and Responsibilities Lead technical definition and implementation of IEC 61850-based architectures , including data modeling, communication services, and system integration concepts. Work with Program & Product Management teams to create high-level specifications. Develop and support real-time controller solutions utilizing design specifications, model-based design which facilitates code generation. Analyse user specifications / requirements to recommend appropriate solutions. Analyse industry standards and market trends to build requirements to propose new developments in GE Vernova products. Work with Customer Support to resolve product, process, and customer issues related to communication protocols. Assist in preparing training material and deliver training courses, where required. Provide technical guidance, direction, and training to a new and / or experienced engineers, specialists, technicians, and co-ops when required. Required Qualifications Degree in Electrical Engineering; a Master’s degree is strongly preferred. Minimum of 5 years of development experience in protection, control, and automation products for transmission and distribution systems. Advanced knowledge of substation automation architectures, including bay-level protection and control devices and station-level integration. Proven experience using applications for real-time controller platforms in protection and automation markets. In-depth, hands-on knowledge of the IEC 61850 standard , including logical node modeling, data object definitions, naming conventions, and engineering workflows. Strong practical experience with IEC 61850 communication services , including MMS, GOOSE, Sampled Values, reporting, control services, and time synchronization concepts. Experience with IEC 61850 system engineering , including SCL (ICD, CID, SCD files), system configuration, interoperability, and multi-vendor integration. Knowledge of IEC 61850-related testing, validation, and conformance practices, including factory and site acceptance testing. Desired Characteristics Detailed knowledge of Ethernet networking, including wired and wireless networks, VLANs, redundancy concepts, and substation switch technologies. Knowledge of digital communication channels for protection and control systems, including fiber optics, switches and routers Working knowledge of cybersecurity technologies applicable to substation automation, including RADIUS, Windows and Unix security administration, Secure Shell, Transport Layer Security, and firewalls. Ability to translate utility engineering standards, documentation practices, and operational procedures to product specification. Ability to share ideas, collaborate effectively in team environments, and adapt to changing priorities with initiative and ownership Working knowledge of GE protection, networking, and substation automation products is preferred. Experience with serial SCADA protocols including DNP3, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-103, and Modbus. Hands-on experience with LAN-based SCADA protocols such as IEC 61850-8-1 (MMS), DNP3/TCP, IEC 60870-5-104, and Modbus TCP. Strong working knowledge of MATLAB and Simulink for model-based design, simulation, and algorithm validation. Knowledge of modern bay controller in transmission and distribution automation developments and trends. Familiarity with industry standards and documentation procedures of electrical utilities. Proven record of writing and presenting papers at industry conferences. Experience in developing applications in Real Time Controller market Knowledge or experience of wireless / Ethernet / serial communications applicable to BCU (such as IEC61850, Modbus, DNP3.0 and IEC60870-5-103, -104). For candidates applying to a Canadian-based position, the pay range for this position is between $105,300 – 142,300 CAD. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
