ABOUT THE ROLE
Role Description:
Amgen is seeking a Manager, Software Development Engineering to lead the design, development, and delivery of innovative, secure, and scalable digital solutions. This leadership role will oversee teams responsible for building full-stack applications, cloud-native services, and automation pipelines that power Amgen’s digital transformation and enhance customer and employee experiences.
The Manager will guide engineering teams across front-end, back-end, and cloud DevOps disciplines, ensuring adherence to best practices in software architecture, agile methodologies, and security compliance. This role requires both technical
expertise
and people leadership

balancing hands-on problem-solving with the ability to mentor and develop talent, manage delivery risks, and drive alignment with business goals.

demonstrate

Roles & Responsibilities:
Take ownership of complex software projects from conception to deployment, managing scope, risks, resources, and timelines.
Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to software developers and DevOps engineers, fostering professional growth and high-performance teams.
Oversee full-stack development, including front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React.js/Angular/Vue.js) and back-end (Node.js, Python, Express.js) technologies.
Design and manage secure, scalable databases (SQL/NoSQL) and ensure efficient data storage, retrieval, and integration.
Build and
maintain
RESTful and
GraphQL
APIs for seamless communication across front-end, back-end, microservices, and external platforms.
Architect, deploy, and
optimize
cloud-native solutions on AWS, Azure, or GCP, ensuring scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Implement and
maintain
Infrastructure as Code (
IaC
) using tools such as AWS CloudFormation or Terraform.
Design and manage CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps) with automated testing, security scanning, and performance monitoring.
Monitor application and infrastructure performance with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or AWS CloudWatch, setting up proactive alerting and remediation processes.
Ensure security best practices, including authentication, authorization, encryption, and protection against vulnerabilities (e.g., XSS, CSRF, SQL injection).
Conduct code reviews to ensure adherence to coding standards, maintainability, and security practices.
Analyze functional and technical requirements, translating them into scalable software architecture and design specifications.
Encourage rapid prototyping and adoption of emerging technologies, including generative AI, to deliver innovative solutions.
Identify
, troubleshoot, and resolve technical challenges, software bugs, and performance issues.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product management, design, QA, and business stakeholders) to deliver high-quality, user-centric software.
Ensure regulatory compliance and security (GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001) across applications and infrastructure.
Create and
maintain
documentation on software architecture, design, deployment, disaster recovery, operations, and development processes.
Drive Agile (SAFE) practices, actively
participating
in planning, reviews, and retrospectives, while promoting continuous improvement.
Provide ongoing support and maintenance of applications and infrastructure, ensuring availability, reliability, and smooth operations.
Stay current with industry trends, technology advancements, and emerging best practices in software engineering, DevOps, and cloud computing.
Basic Qualifications and Experience:

Master’s degree with 4 - 6 years of experience in Computer Science,
IT
or related
field OR
Bachelor’s degree with 6 - 8 years of experience in Computer Science,
IT
or related
field OR
Diploma with 10 - 12 years of experience in Computer Science,
IT
or related field
Functional Skills:
Must-Have Skills (Not more than 3 to 4):
Hands-on experience with Full Stack software development,
proficiency
in Python (preferred), JavaScript, React.js/Node.js/Express.js, and SQL/NoSQL databases.
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), applying well-architected principles, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation), and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps).
Strong understanding of designing, building, and integrating RESTful/
GraphQL
APIs within microservices and serverless architectures.
Strong problem-solving and leadership skills, with excellent communication and collaboration abilities to guide teams and manage complex projects.
Good-to-Have Skills:
Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Hands-on experience with observability and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, AWS CloudWatch, ELK/
Opensearch
).
Strong understanding of DevOps practices and automated testing within CI/CD.
Strong understanding of application reliability, scalability, and performance optimization (HA/DR,
caching
, load balancing, auto-scaling).
Knowledge of security and compliance practices including IAM, encryption, vulnerability scanning, and regulatory frameworks (GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001).
Knowledge of emerging technologies including generative AI for prototyping and automation accelerators.
Professional Certifications
