Job Overview: The Li-Ion Battery Design Specialist is responsible for designing and developing advanced lithium-ion battery systems. This role involves creating innovative battery designs that meet performance, safety, and cost requirements. The specialist will collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring battery technologies from concept to production. Key Responsibilities: Battery Design:  Develop and optimize lithium-ion battery designs, including cell selection, BMS, and other packs elements, to meet specific performance, safety, and reliability criteria. Performance Analysis:  Conduct detailed performance analysis, including capacity, energy density, cycle life, thermal management, and efficiency. Use simulation tools and lab experiments to validate design specifications. Prototyping:  Design and oversee the fabrication of battery prototypes. Collaborate with engineering and production teams to ensure prototypes meet design goals and functional requirements. Safety and Compliance:  Ensure that battery designs comply with relevant safety standards, regulations, and certifications, such as UL, IEC, or UN38.3. Implement safety features and fail-safes to enhance battery safety and reliability. Material Selection:  Research and select appropriate materials for battery components, such as cells, BMS, thermal dissipators, bus bars etc, to achieve desired performance characteristics. Collaboration:  Work closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, electrical to integrate battery designs into larger systems or applications. Testing and Validation:  Develop and execute test plans to evaluate battery performance under various conditions. Analyze test results and refine designs based on findings. Documentation:  Prepare detailed design documentation, including specifications, design reviews, and technical reports. Maintain accurate records of design iterations, test results, and modifications. SOP creation and release to production. Innovation:  Stay current with industry trends, technological advancements, and emerging technologies in battery design. Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance battery performance and reduce costs. Qualifications: Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) are preferred. Experience:  Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in battery design or development, with a strong focus on lithium-ion technology. Experience with battery management systems (BMS) and thermal management is a must. Skills: Proficiency in battery modeling and simulation software (e.g., COMSOL, MATLAB/Simulink). Strong understanding of electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and materials science as they pertain to battery technology. Experience with CAD software for designing and prototyping battery components. Knowledge of safety standards and regulations for battery systems. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly and effectively. Certifications:  Relevant certifications or training in battery technology or design are a plus. Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a lab environment and handle various types of laboratory equipment. Capability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and stand or move around for extended periods. Working Conditions: Full-time position with typical shifts [9am-6pm]. Potential for occasional travel to suppliers, manufacturers, or industry conferences.
