ABOUT UMMEED
Ummeed (
https://ummeed.org/)
is a not-for-profit organization whose vision is to help children with developmental disabilities and those at high risk of them reach their full potential and be included in society. It was founded in 2001 by Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy, a developmental pediatrician, Ashoka Fellow, and resource person for government and international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO).
Over the past 25 years, Ummeed has provided direct services to 16,400+ children and families, trained over 14,600 unique professionals (community workers, doctors, therapists, and teachers) across India, and influenced the lives of over 0.73 million children and families with or at risk of developmental disabilities. In addition to direct clinical services, training, and capacity building, Ummeed’s two other verticals are research (to generate evidence of our work) and awareness building (to sensitize people to the cause and shift attitudes).
As Ummeed looks to the future, its goal is to build on this past work to drive strategic shifts across three key ecosystems – Healthcare, Schools, and Early Childhood Development – to create a more inclusive society for children with and at high likelihood of disabilities in India.
The Developmental Pediatrics (DP) team
at Ummeed is a strong 7-member team that provides clinical care to children and families with concerns about developmental delays or differences, or who are referred by their school or other professionals for evaluation.
Developmental Pediatricians conduct comprehensive evaluations to understand children’s developmental profiles and support families in navigating diagnoses, identifying appropriate interventions, and accessing resources. This includes partnering with families, providing ongoing guidance, and monitoring progress from birth up to age 18.
In addition to clinical services, the Developmental Pediatric team offers the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP)-approved yearlong DP fellowship and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS)-accredited 6-month certificate course in Developmental Pediatrics for practicing pediatricians. The team also conducts training sessions and workshops for professionals and caregivers at events in India and internationally. Members are also engaged in research and publications.
The DP team members hold important positions in organizations around the world, including Dr. Koyeli Sengupta, a Global Senior Leader and National Representative of INSAR- the International Society of Autism Research, and Dr. Roopa Srinivasan, a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) and an Associate Member of the CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, a Canadian research organization.
