Senior Design Engineer – Trommel Engineering & Detailing (SolidWorks / ANSYS / 3DEXPERIENCE)
Help engineer the future of sustainable mining
At FLSmidth, our MissionZero ambition is focused on enabling zero-emissions mining. Through innovation, engineering excellence, and deep industry expertise, we help our customers deliver the materials the world needs—more responsibly and efficiently.
We’re looking for a technically strong Design Engineer to join our global Mining Products Engineering Department, supporting the end-to-end design and development of trommel systems and consumables.
This role is suited to candidates with proven experience in heavy mining equipment, rotary process equipment, screening systems, or large fabricated industrial machinery. Candidates without relevant heavy industry equipment experience will not be considered.
The successful candidate will bring strong SolidWorks capability, proven finite element analysis (ANSYS) experience, and a practical engineering background in heavy mechanical and structural equipment design.
Please note:
Candidates without prior experience in heavy mining equipment, rotary process equipment, screening systems, or large fabricated industrial machinery will not be considered for this position.
About the Role
As part of our Consumables Engineering Team, you will be responsible for the end-to-end design, detailing, and optimisation of trommel systems and associated consumables.
This is a hands-on engineering and detailing role, working across global engineering, manufacturing, and product teams. You will take ownership of designs from concept through to manufacture and field performance, ensuring solutions are robust, manufacturable, and aligned to operational requirements.
The role requires a strong understanding of heavy fabricated equipment, rotating machinery, wear applications, and structural engineering principles within demanding mining and mineral processing environments.
Key Responsibilities
Develop detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD
Perform and interpret finite element analysis (FEA) using ANSYS to validate structural integrity and optimise designs
Design and detail trommel systems and consumables, including:
rotating drums
frames and support structures
internal components and wear elements
Deliver end-to-end engineering, from concept development through to manufacturing and in-field performance feedback
Produce complete and accurate manufacturing drawing packages, including:
general arrangements (GA)
fabrication drawings
weld details
machining drawings
bills of materials (BOMs)
Work within ENOVIA / 3DEXPERIENCE for data management, revision control, and global collaboration
Ensure designs consider:
structural integrity
fatigue and dynamic loading
manufacturability
tolerances and fits
material selection and wear performance
transport and installation constraints
Collaborate with manufacturing and site teams to support:
fabrication
assembly
installation
troubleshooting and continuous improvement
Review and optimise designs based on:
FEA outcomes
site feedback
performance and wear data
cost and manufacturability improvements
Maintain CAD standards, libraries, and engineering documentation
Identify design risks early and implement practical, robust engineering solutions
What You Bring
Core Requirements
Strong, hands-on experience in SolidWorks (3D modelling and drafting) — a key requirement
Proven experience using ANSYS (or equivalent FEA tools) for structural analysis and validation — essential
Minimum 7 years’ experience in heavy mining equipment, mineral processing equipment, or similar heavy industrial machinery
Proven experience producing detailed fabrication and manufacturing drawings for large fabricated equipment
Strong background in heavy mechanical, structural, rotating, or mining-related equipment design
Prior experience in one or more of the following is required:
Trommels
SAG/Ball Mill equipment
Vibrating Screens
Rotary Dryers or Kilns
Bulk Materials Handling Equipment
Large rotating or fabricated process equipment
Strong understanding of:
structural behaviour and load paths

Ability to translate engineering concepts into practical, buildable designs
Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal) — essential
High attention to detail and engineering accuracy
Highly Regarded (but not essential)
Experience with trommel systems and mining consumables
Experience in mining or mineral processing environments
Exposure to 3DEXPERIENCE / ENOVIA (PLM systems)
Experience designing wear components or consumables
Site exposure including shutdowns, commissioning, or maintenance support
Experience working with global engineering or OEM mining teams
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or equivalent
Typically 7+ years’ experience in design engineering or a similar heavy industry role
Personal Attributes
Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively
Strong communication skills and ability to work across global teams
