Job Description: Switch Engineer
Role Overview
A Switch Engineer is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network switching systems. This role ensures smooth data/voice traffic flow across enterprise or telecom networks.
Key Responsibilities
Configure and manage
Layer 2 / Layer 3 switches
(Cisco, Juniper, etc.)
Perform
VLAN creation, trunking, STP configuration
Monitor network performance and troubleshoot:
Connectivity issues
Packet loss / latency
Broadcast storms
Support
network upgrades and migrations
Work on
switch firmware updates and patching
Maintain documentation:
Network diagrams
Configuration backups
Change logs
Collaborate with:
Network engineers
Security teams
Data center teams
Technical Skills Required
Core Networking
TCP/IP fundamentals
VLANs, STP, RSTP
Routing basics (OSPF, static routing)
Subnetting
Switching Technologies
Cisco Catalyst / Nexus switches (or equivalents)
Port configuration & troubleshooting
Link Aggregation (LACP / EtherChannel)
Tools & Platforms
CLI (command-line interface)
Network monitoring tools (SolarWinds, Nagios, PRTG, etc.)
Basic knowledge of SNMP, Syslog
Preferred / Bonus Skills
Experience with
data center networking
Knowledge of
network security (ACLs, port security)
Exposure to
automation (Python, Ansible)
CCNA or equivalent certification
